Having a cold sore is challenging. Here are some helpful "do's" and "don'ts" to not only get through the next outbreak, but also to lessen the chances of another one.

DO'S

• DO learn to recognize the signs of a cold sore. When you feel that tingling, itching, or burning in your lips, a cold sore is likely coming on. This is when you should start using ABREVA®.
• DO get into the habit of washing your hands regularly with soap and warm water. It's your best defense against cold, flu and infection.
• DO learn to know your individual triggers. For example, if cold sores tend to crop up when you get stressed out or run down, try to relax during stressful periods.
• DO use sun block. Since exposure to sunlight is one of the most preventable of triggers, be sure you use a good sun block, not just a sunscreen. Look for zinc oxide or titanium dioxide in the ingredients.
• DO keep your body hydrated. Drink plenty of water, and use gentle, extra-moisturizing cleansers and hydrating masks for your skin. Also, try to avoid things that can dry out your skin, such as an overly hot furnace or super-hot baths or showers.
• DO keep ABREVA on hand. For best results, ABREVA should be used at the first sign of a cold sore. So keep a pump or tube handy in your medicine cabinet or purse, or at your workplace.
• DO talk to your pharmacist about any concerns about your cold sore. Remember, he or she is there to help you and offer reliable, relevant advice.
• DO see your doctor if your cold sore lasts more than 10 days.

DON'TS

• DON'T scratch or pick at a cold sore no matter what stage it's in. This could lead to an infection that may require antibiotics.
• DON'T check it compulsively in the mirror. Checking to see if your cold sore is going away won't make it disappear any faster.
• DON'T believe everything you read on the Internet. Cold sore remedies abound, along with misinformation, and not all healing claims are supported. If you have questions, ask your pharmacist.
• DON'T kiss when you're contagious. Although cold sores are infectious throughout the entire outbreak, they are especially so during the blister stage. Be especially careful not to touch a weeping blister. This could increase the risk of spreading the infection to others.
• DON'T borrow someone else's lipstick. Because the HSV-1 virus is so easily transferred, don't borrow someone else's lipstick - or lend your lipstick to someone else.
• DON'T apply more ABREVA than needed. Follow the instructions for use.
